Cait Bourgault on Motherhood
This Mother’s Day, we’re catching up with our friend Cait Bourgault—a runner, skier, professional photographer, mother, and so much more—who recently trained for and completed the Boston Marathon. We talked about motherhood, matching Skida prints, and everyday adventures with her daughter, Fiona.
Whether they're puddle jumping, swinging, or exploring the woods behind their house in Western Maine, Cait has found that the best adventures don’t require a big plan—just time together. She reminds us that motherhood is wild, surprising, and full of beauty, especially when seen through the eyes of a little one.
A Q&A with Cait Bourgault 📸
How do you and Fiona like to get outside together?
Our favorite way to get outside is in our backyard! Whether we're puddle jumping, playing on the swingset, gardening, or exploring the woods looking for animals, our favorite adventures are right at our home here in Western Maine. Motherhood has taught me that adventure can be found wherever you are with your little one. The little outings are really the best because they allow her to be creative and explore, with no real plan or agenda. Sure, we love our bigger days out hiking mountains, XC skiing or biking, but there is so much beauty right out our back door. I love seeing the world through her eyes!
What has surprised you most about motherhood?
1. How much I would learn about myself. Motherhood is such a wild journey and has challenged me in the most profound ways. It made me take a deeper look at what really matters in life, and continues to teach me about the importance of patience, unconditional love, and connection. I felt like my life began when Fiona was born, not that beforehand didn't happen, but it gave me a new start to show up as the best version of myself.
2. Honestly - everything. I had little to no experience with kids before Fi, so I was learning on the fly and continue to do so. I put a lot of pressure on myself early on to do things a certain way, but as time went on, I learned that leading with my heart brought out the best in me as a mother.
3. How fast time really does fly. It feels like yesterday that she was a newborn, and now she's 4! It went by in a blink of an eye. The saying was right - "the days are long but the years are short." Some days I wish I could stop time, but I realize that the greatest gift life could give me was the honor of watching her grow.
What are each of your favorite Skida prints? Does Fiona like to match?
My favorite is Bitterroot - I tend to gravitate towards skida's floral patterns most. Fiona loves her fox prints [First Frost] because her beloved stuffed animal is a fox, as well as the cow print hat! We often coordinate our skida gear with colors or prints and she'll say excitedly, "Mumma we match!" I hope she never stops wanting to match me.
