Hearts with Nepal

A Note From Corinne -

Since the recent flash flood hit Nepal’s Trishuli River valley, it’s been difficult to take my mind off of the destruction and suffering that is happening in Nepal and Tibet right now.  My heart goes out to everyone affected by this natural disaster.

Nepal has played a significant role in my life and the Skida journey and I want to share how we are planning to support the relief efforts after Nepal’s recent devastating floods.

Relief

The focus of the flood relief efforts will be on restoring the critical transportation routes, rehousing thousands of displaced Nepali people and repairing roads, hydropower and community infrastructure, which is estimated to cost billions of dollars.

Nepal is still paying for the damage from the 2015 earthquake, and this compounding expense will not come easy for a small, impoverished country. Many drivers of Nepal’s economy, in particular hydroelectric power and tourism, are directly affected by the disaster. 

One of the most effective things we can do is bring money to the country to support these repairs by continuing and growing our business and relationships in Nepal. Skida’s been importing Cashmere from Nepal for over 12 years directly from family-owned Nepali factories and we will continue to do so.  

Connection

My connection to Nepal started in 2011 when I spent four months in school based in Kathmandu.  In this time abroad, I learned to speak Nepali, about their long history with development and foreign aid, the unique affects of Nepal’s dramatic landscape, and focused my studies on the textile industry. The knitting and weaving factories that I toured and interviewed all those years ago are still crafting Skida’s Cashmere Collection today.
